USB-powered devices go with us everywhere and it's important to stay connected. However, not all chargers or cables are created equal. What should you consider when choosing the best USB charging solutions? What's all this talk about amps, volts and rapid charging? Here’s a breakdown of important factors to consider, starting with three key features:
Don't sit around waiting for your device to charge. When choosing the right USB charger, make sure the charger supplies enough amps to charge your mobile device at the fastest rate possible.
For example:
• iPhones= 1 amp
• Androids = 1.6 amps
• iPads = 2.4 amps.
When choosing a charger for multiple devices, the total output must match or be higher than what each device requires to charge at the fullest rate. To find this out, add up the required amps for all the devices you'll be charging.
For example:
Android + iPad = 3+ amp charger.
Voltage matters. Most chargers are rated at 5 volts, but some are capable of pushing more voltage for a faster charge. For instance, 4.8A output provides the maximum output for 3 Android devices, but the only way to charge them faster is to increase the voltage. This will charge the device about 20% faster.
Consider where you'll be charging most of the time to find the right cord length:
1 ft. best for desktop charging
3 ft. standard length and perfect for the car
6 ft. for nightstands and other furniture
9 ft. offers flexibility in hard to reach areas
There are three main types of USB connectors currently out there today.
Micro USB cables: most devices except Apple devices.
Lightning cables: exclusively for all mobile devices by Apple.
30-pin USB cables: used on legacy Apple devices.
Believe it or not, the thickness of a cable also matters. A thicker cable will charge better than a thin cable, especially when the cable is longer than 6 feet. The same should be when considering a USB extension cable.
Number of Ports/Devices: Consider how many devices you'll need to charge. It's better to choose more over less when it comes to the number of USB ports for wall chargers and car chargers.
Charging Kits: Bundles usually combine a power cord and several useful adapters for the car and home in one convenient kit.
Cable Management: USB chargers with built-in cable management make it easy to keep cables secure and neatly organized, while also eliminating a tangled mess of cords at your desk or kitchen counter.
Surge Protection: USB chargers with enhanced surge protection let you charge multiple devices while safeguarding your electronics.
Versatile Options: Some chargers work best for the home or office, like tabletop chargers or charging stations. Others are designed specifically for on-the-go travel like USB car chargers or compact chargers with foldable plugs.
Eye Indicator™ Technology: USB chargers with intelligent LED light indicator technology provide at-a-glance charging status and shines red when charging, green once fully charged and blue when idle.
The average household has 3-5 USB-dependent devices.
Double-check amps! Multiple ports don't always mean higher amperage.
